Comptonia peregrina
Sweet Fern is one of my favorite scents in the world, from a highly fragrant native perennial bush that grows throughout the eastern and mid US. It is found in abundance on the shores of Walden Pond, where I first noticed and immediately adored its scent as a child. It has been recently studied as a source of a new class of anti-bacterial compounds effective against gram-positive bacteria including MRSA. It is mildly astringent, and is used by some herbalists to treat insect bites and rashes including poison ivy. Sweet Fern Hydrosol makes a great stand-alone toner for oily or acne prone skin.
The hydrosol is made from my own carefully tended patches of Sweet Fern, harvested in summer at the peak of fragrance. The scent is slightly spicy, and very warm and woodsy.
