Monarda fistulosa
Wild Bergamot is a vigorous North American native perennial with purple Who-ville blossoms that are a feast for our eyes and for pollinators; another name for this jolly plant is Bee Balm. It is rich in thymol and other polyphenols that provide anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and analgesic benefits to the skin.
Of all my garden’s plants, Wild Bergamot produces the highest concentration of essential oils upon distillation, which I leave within the final solution to impart its benees. The name comes from its similarity in scent to the Mediterranean citrus plant, Bergamot, that flavors Earl Grey tea.
The scent is pungent and herby like Thyme, but much more floral.
