Description
The recipe that inspired my breast salve comes from Rosemary Gladstar’s Herbal Recipes for Vibrant Health, where she describes the work of Donald Yance, master herbalist and author of Herbal Medicine, Healing and Cancer. He notes that Poke Root is known for its anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory and immune stimulant activity.
Each batch of my breast salve is over a year in the making, as the process of choosing, harvesting, steeping and straining an ideal Pokeweed plant takes many months. I decided to make this salve after doctor’s found a cyst in my breast, and I use it every day with no adverse effects. Poke is a powerful plant, and is considered toxic if certain parts of the plant are eaten out of season. That being said, it is also a former staple of soul food (“Poke Sallet” i.e. salad) and a favorite among foragers. The root is never eaten and is only used medicinally.
